I need to have some form of heating for a small 2 bed. town house (Off street) of traditional style.

I  understand all the usual types of appliances which are on offer.  I would appreciate any suggestion as to how they have dealt with it.

Thanks.

Hi Ellie

I'm assuming you own, and not rent, your place.

In the long run, aircon is the best option for heating (and in summer, cooling) your place.

However the supply and installation costs must be considered.  There are also some considerations: for example, the outdoors fan (if it not replacing a previous unit) mustn't be visible from the street.  Some of the cheaper models make a hissing or humming sound which some people find distracting, especially in a bedroom or when sitting, relaxing.  If you have allergies such as hay fever, you might wish to select a unit with a suitable filter.

You could of course, save some money and get spot heating such as a fan heater, but these consume as much electricity (or even more) than an aircon unit.  You can buy portable aircon units which are plugged into the nearest available socket.  Prices start from about €125 from the likes of Leroy Merlin across the border in Huelva, Spain or Loulé.

There are a number of aircon places in Vila Real de Santo António.  The biggest firm is in the industrial estate near the train station.  There are also aircon places in Ayamonte.

You will need to measure the volume of each room.  Measure the length x width x height and add 25% to your total to allow for a door and window.  It is better to choose a unit which is more powerful than your measurements indicate as a bigger motor running at low power uses less electricity and will require less servicing.  It will also be much quieter.  There is very little difference in the cost.

If your place is being remodelled or is under construction, you could consider getting a heat pump or solar panels.  The initial cost is much higher but the running costs are very low, especially solar panels.

Good luck

Many thanks for your suggestions to my request regarding heating. I have taken onboard the very informative information

which you have given me.  I will now be better able to decide which option to choose. Thank  you.

Hi every one,

I am still searching this info.

For a consecutive 6 months in Portugal in order to satisfy the requirenent of the  SEF, is it from the 1st day of entry that SEF counts or from the 2nd entry ( after leaving and entering within 3 months)?

Any body  has applyed for 2nd visa after 2 years residency with the initial visa should have the answer.

Thank you

Michele
