Hi JulieC.

Best place to look in Vila Real de Santo Antonio are the shops on the pedestrian section of Rua Teofilo Braga between CTT, the post office and Apolo hotel.

Stuff sold locally will be best suited for local conditions and definitely won't cost you stupid money. If you don't have transport they'll deliver to your place if you're not too far out of town.

By the way, it's considered bad manners to haggle over the price, but it's ok to ask something like "how much do you want?"

Good luck

Hi all,

Anyone know the best place for bulk good quality bedding more centrally in the Algarve? I'm near Silves.

Hi Aspidistra

I'm on extreme eastern end of Algarve and don't know the western end too well. However I remember there is a great main street through Loulé.

If you have the time, the inclination and transport, it may be worth your while exploring Loulé's main streets. I appreciate Loulé is some distance from Silves.

You could visit Ikea, of course, but do not expect bedding made in the Far East and sold by a Swedish company to be designed to suit Portuguese conditions. However, Ikea might be marginally cheaper and perhaps can arrange delivery if required.

Good luck

Hi Derrymore, thanks for that, Indeed I know Loule well. I expect I may well end up in IKEA, my partner loves going there to eat the meatballs! (If the cafe is open these days?).

everyone seems to say for doing holiday rentals you should go for really high count cotton sheets. Snag with that is ironing and drying, although if anyone knows a good laundry in Silves area that is another thing…

Hi Aspidistra

Tell your partner if they don't already know, that if you get an IKEA Family card there's free coffee at the café.

It's the only benefit for the customer I can see in return for pouring out your heart and soul on the application form.

The advantage of a high thread count on bed linen is it feels much smoother on the skin, and is far less likely to be damaged by stuff like sharp toenails. The tighter weave significantly reduces the possibility of unwanted creatures transferring from your customers into the bed structure where they are very difficult to eradicate. (And you don't want to read all about it in TripAdvisor and Booking.com!)

Guests will expect fresh sheets and pillow cases on arrival. That's the norm. Else you'll read all about it on TripAdvisor or Booking.com!

A rotary iron, such as a Speedqueen (if you can get your hands on one!), is the answer to ironing sheets.  You just feed flat fabrics like sheets in the top and they come out nice and smooth at the bottom.

Drying them on the line will significantly reduce wrinkles - and save on your electricity bill.

Choose a mild detergent for washing bed linen as some people are allergic to the chemicals used.

My gut feeling is that it would be better try your luck in Loulé before going to IKEA.

Good luck

Thanks so much for all this info! I had thought about a high thread count etc as more comfortable, not about it wearing better and protecting the mattresses!

We have an IKEA family card, it's from the UK but works at Loule. So free coffee while we consider the thread count.

Ikea is good in Loule but there are plenty of shops in Vila Real selling quality towels and bedding
