Hi Michele,

I don't personally but I presume that you know that you need a Portugese tax number to do so.

I opened a bank account in Lagos in 2019 and it took about a half hour. The tax number took about 20 minutes to obtain. Once the bank saw that they were happy.

Hope that helps.

Hi Michele

You shouldn't need a lawyer to open a Portuguese bank account. Certainly I didn't. As Daniel says you'll need your NIF (tax number) before you do anything.

Generally speaking you'll need supply a utility bill, evidence of a Portuguese address, passport and possibly the details of your existing bank - and your 9-digit NIF number.

CTT, the post office, and Activo offer free banking for most routine business. Activo is part of Millennium Bank, Portugal's biggest. You can open your account with either online. Their websites are in English if that's easier for you.

You can also use non-Portuguese banks such as Revolut or N26 which are free of charge. (Note a small number of traders only accept Portuguese credit and debit cards)

Good luck Derrymore
