Contact Abbeygate, Ibex or Fidelidade (there are dozens more if you search) and give them all the information to get a quote. As far as I know you will have to have the car matriculated if it stays in Portugal and, from what I have heard, this is very expensive.

Hi all, we have a car with UK plates which we drove to Portugal in April. I have received conflicting information in relation to the obligations we have to continue to use the car here, particularly since the impact of Brexit. We know we need to register the car in Portugal, however it is unclear how and when. Further, when other EU residents have tried, apparently it is a very onerous process and takes around a year. Any advice hugely appreciated! Thanks Jo

Hi Jo33,

When I came to Portugal I bought a Portuguese car but changed my UK driving licence for a Portuguese one. I used a company called DocAuto Insurance (in Lagoa) who were brilliant and cheap. A friend drove his Skoda from UK and decided to matriculate the car as he now lived in Portugal. He used the same company and the total cost was over €4,000 (twice the value of the car) of which over €3,000 went to the Portuguese government.
