Hi there

I have just purchased a property in the algarve and I was considering buying a car to keep there rather than renting. Can any one offer any advise on how I can go about this and what documentation I need. I know there are lots of car pitches on the N125 so choosing one shouldn’t be the problem, it’s just knowing what I need.

A second option is to drive a car down there from the UK, but I’m a bit concerned about getting an MOT and if it’s suitable for Portugal roads

many thanks

Steve

Hello,

we live part time in Burgua and bought a Portuguese car in May (NB they are around 40-50% more than you would expect to pay in the UK)

We looked into matriculating a UK car but the cost is prohibitive and we would have ended up with a right hand drive.

As far as I know, whether or not you have an MOT, you can’t keep a UK registered car in Portugal for more than sixth months?

Nor am I sure that you can get a UK registered car, legitimately MOT’d in Portugal?

The key issue for us was how to get reasonably priced long term parking, close to Faro Airport, as it was not worthwhile our buying a car, if we were still going to have to pay for airport transfers.

Any we struck lucky and found Parc and Trip, literally 8 minutes walk from the airport and only 1 euro per day, although you have to pay 365 euros per year, whether you use it every day or not. The car park is secure with a barrier and is manned apart from between 1am and 4 am.

We also know a nice, (English) Portuguese Car Insurance Broker,  who is really helpful.

Hope this helps?

Niel

Hi

Secondhand cars expensive . We actually bought new in the end as the new car was more realistic to the price at home. Nothing fancy but something to keep in mind.
