Dear, I would move from Poland to Portugal because I love Your country, culture and mindset, my dream is to spend cloudy/cold autumn, winter, spring at Your city. Could You please offer me piece of land to build small house made from wood. When I will be present and well organized in Vila Real de Santo Antonio I would get into contact with local manufacturers of food (fruits, meat, vine, etc) and craft products to get them exported into central eastern Europe. Please support my reqest, Im starting learning Portugese language. Grzegorz (Greg), [email protected]

Hi Greg

Unfortunately, I can't offer you any land!

However, if you have not already done so, look up estate agents in Vila Real de Santo Antonio (VRSA). The biggest is Idealista (idealists.pt/vrsa).

Land is cheaper if you go away from the coast, but even 50km inland there is a big difference in the temperature, especially in the summer when temperatures often exceed 45c for weeks on end. The land dries out and each year there are fires which can do a lot of damage.  There are strict laws about protecting your land from fires. You can be jailed or fined if you are not looking after your land.

Make sure to have a good map ready when you get a list from the estate agent. You will need to know if utilities such as electricity, safe water and internet are available if you're thinking about your business. Vehicles are very expensive in Portugal. Will you wish to import one from Poland and pay the taxes?

You should consider renting a place for 6 months or so, to get to know the area, the people (who may be your customers and suppliers).

If you hold a Polish passport, you will enjoy all the privileges of EU membership. You'll need register for a fiscal number (NIF) which is required for many transactions, including opening a bank account and signing a lease. When you are settled down in your place, you must apply for residency. This allows you to register for healthcare, schools if you have children, and so on.

The nearest "big" hospital to VRSA is in Faro, but there are clinics in most of the larger towns where you'll be seen (either free of charge or low cost) when you attend with your E111/EHIC card, which is issued free by the health centre in your Polish city.

Good luck
