I have agricultural land in Portugal and so have a fiscal number. Does anyone understand what it means by registering with a solicitor so they can arrange my tax affairs. I live in England. Does this new rule which supposedly has been passed apply to me thanks for any advice

Hi Denbo,

Now that you own land in Portugal, there will be annual tax returns to do.  The amount of tax is depending on the value of your land.

This has no relation to where you pay your income tax!

Unless you understand all the details of your land registration and value (held at the local town hall) you will find it much easier to find a solicitor to work out the tax and complete the return for you.

Did you not buy the land via a Portuguese solicitor?  They are probably best placed to do this for you - as they will have needed to get these details as part of the purchase process.

I purchased my house via Veronica Pisco, who has a small office in Tavira, as well as her main office in Almancil.

I live and process my income taxes in the Netherlands.

She has processed my Portuguese tax return for my house/land ownership.  I am sure she can help you, if your purchasing solicitor can not.

As I understand it, you have until 31/05 to pay any due Municipal Property Tax (IMI) !!!

I hope this helps

Ian
