Hello, i have been living in the Algarve full time since last July 2020. I only receive a state pension which i get paid into my UK bank i am 67. I do not work. This money is used to pay my bills here. I half own the house i live in the Algarve. Surely i do not have to pay tax on a state pension   ?  In Uk we don't have to do tax returns when we no longer work. Please advice? Yvonne.

Hi Yvonne,

I think you need to seek professional help, in the country where you are paying your taxes, to get the correct answers to your questions for your exact situation.

e.g. Are you registered for tax in UK or PT?, Have you advised the UK tax Office you are living in PT?, Are you a registered resident in PT?,  etc etc etc.

FYI

I am living and working in the Netherlands and own a property in PT, with the intention to move full time to PT when I get to 65.

My UK bank accounts have been shut down by the bank - because I am not living in the UK as part of the BREXIT agreement.

I hope you can get the correct advice.

Ian

Hi again,

Not sure what happened on previous post, all my PTs got converted to EN in submitted version?

So read Portugal where (if) you see EN

I hope this copy/paste leaves my PTs in place.

I think the rest of the post was left as typed.

Ian

I do not pay tax in uk as i no longer work and am retired. I keep my pension in uk as i pay some uk bills with it. I am on 3 year of residency. Covid and Brexit has made things difficult. My boyfriend has returned to UK to work as he is not retired. I came out here in July 2020 and have stayed. If covid had not happened i would still be living in UK. . Not sure what will happen in the future? Europeans who are living in the UK do not have to give up their driving licence and their nations bank account. They dont pay UK a percentage of their pension. ????

Hi Yvonne,

I still recommend you contact a professional tax advisor, in the UK, as I think some of your assumptions over your UK pension are not correct.

A first quick chat should be free, to at least know where you stand for taxes.

I wish you success on this quest.

Ian
